START WITH A SONG I start with the child’s innate musicianship and develop from there. That means that I encourage them to use their voices, even the very youngest children, and sing at the pitches and the intervals they can manage – just 2 or 3 at first. My task is to encourage both children and their parents to sing simple folk songs and rhythmic games with exact intonation and build up confidence and skills from that foundation. Children and adults can develop their musicianship to a high level through singing, without being held back by the technical difficulties of taking on an instrument. When I do teach recorder or tuned percussion to children (5 years +), their singing has given them an internal bank of music knowledge which can be utilised and transferred to instruments and ensemble work.
